Alexander Davison was a race driver. Research Notes: Lex Davison, racing driver, businessman, husband, father and raconteur, was a larger than life character, who had taken on "legendary' status prior to his tragic death at the wheel of his Brabham racing car at Sandown Park in February 1965, whilst contesting the international Tasman series. Lex Davison still remains the only driver to have won four Australian Grand Prix. This is backed up by three Australian Hillclimb championships, the original winner of the Australian Gold Star, Around Australia rallies and legendary performances at the wheel of the massive Ford Galaxie. Lex also competed overseas in racing and touring car events in England, the famous Le Mans 24 hour race, and took the first Holden overseas to compete in the 1953 Monte Carlo Rally. Lex also drove the famous "Bluebird", and provided great support to Donald Campbell during the land speed record attempt. Away from the track Lex developed extensive interests in business, farming and property, along with a keen interest in Australian art, yet still found time for his large family. A biography, "Lex Davison- Larger Than Life" recalls the life of a highly admired man, who achieved great things in a most interesting time in Australia's history. The biography was released in March 2004. see http://www.lexdavison.com/. |

Research Notes: The Davison clan have a strong connection to the Sandown Motor Raceway circuit. The circuit promotor is former formula 5000 driver Jon Davison, a well-known figure in Australian motor racing circles. Davison's father, Lex, a four-time Australian Grand Prix winner in the 1950s and early 1960s, lost his life at the circuit in February 1965. Davison crashed his 2.5-litre Brabham Climax in practice for the International 100, after he suffered a heart attack. Undeterred, his son Jon not only raced cars, but took over as Sandown track promotor in 1990. This weekend he will watch as his son and two nephews take to the track, following in their grandfather's footsteps. Jon's son James will race in the formula Ford events, while his nephew, Alex, will suit up in the Castrol Perkins Commodore alongside ex-formula Ford champion Jamie Whincup in the Sandown 500. Alex's brother, Will, will drive in another Holden, alongside Dale Brede in the second Team Dynamik car. Advertisement Advertisement James Davison is just beginning his career, but Alex is strongly consolidating his reputation in Australia, having returned home at the start of this season to drive in the Carrera Cup championship, which he currently leads. Alex Davision had spent the past few years in Europe, where he was driving a factory-backed Porsche in the Porsche Supercup Championship, the support category for formula one. Next season he will drive full time in the V8 supercar championship for Perkins. |

Owen Shine was a labourer with Melbounre City Council. He emigrated in September 1884 from Co Limerick, Ireland, travelling on the Liguria An extensive search of the Shipping Records (Victoria, New South Wales and Morton Bay, Queensland) failed to find an emigration record for Owen but the vessel, Liguria , was chosen as the most likely ship as there were two entries for William Shine, age 18, one on page 3 and other on page 16. It is assumed, but not proven, that this was a clerical error and Williams's name was entered twice and Owen's omitted. In 1920 Owen Shine was living at at Canning Street, Cartlton. Research Notes: Owen and his family lived in Canning Street Carlton and his brother, Con and family, lived in nearby Drummond Street. The children of both families and their many cousins played together and attended St Bridget's Parish school. Owen owned a jinker which he used for Sunday outings with the family visiting their many relatives. |
