Garrrett Sheehy and Bridget (nee Shine) Sheehy photo take c1925      Garrett Joseph Sheehy was born on 6 November 1876 at Palmerston St., Carlton, Victoria, Australia; (certificate states b. nr the Clare Castle Hotel).1 He was the son of Cornelius Sheehy and Johanna Fitzgibbon. Garrett Joseph Sheehy married Bridget Shine, daughter of Henry Shine and Catherine Sheehy, on 17 June 1903 at St Bridget's, Carlton, Victoria, Australia; (marr wits: Mary Agnes Shine and Trevor O'Shea). Mary was her sister and Trevor was her future brother-in-law.2 Garrett was buried at at Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton, A headstone is inscribed: In loving memory of my dear husband, Garrett SHEEHY, died 25 Mar 1945 also Brigid loving wife of above died 31 Mar 1958, Cornelius, loved son of above, died 30 Aug 1983. He died on 21 May 1941, at Carlton, Victoria, Australia, at age 64 (Death not registered).       Garrett Joseph Sheehy was a book clerk. Research Notes: Garret and Bridget were first cousins.

She was christened on 22 August 1880 at Shanagolden Parish (St Senans), Shanagolden, Co Limerick, Ireland.1 She was the daughter of Henry Shine and Catherine Sheehy. Mary Agnes Shine married Trevor O'Shea, son of George William O'Shea and Julia Frances Buckley, on 21 July 1913 at Perth, Western Australia, Australia; (witnesses were A. B. O''Shea - presumably a relative and Maggie Gaynor. It is more than likely that Maggie was also related as Mary's aunt was married to Thomas Gaynor).2 Mary Agnes Shine died in 1956, at Kanella Private Hospital, 35 Mitchell Street, Brunswick, Victoria, Australia.3 Mary was buried at at Melbourne General Cemetery.      She emigrated in 1894 from Co Limerick, Ireland, travelling on the Oruba. Trevor O'Shea was born in 1879. He was the son of George William O'Shea and Julia Frances Buckley. Trevor O'Shea married Mary Agnes Shine, daughter of Henry Shine and Catherine Sheehy, on 21 July 1913 at Perth, Western Australia, Australia; (witnesses were A. B. O''Shea - presumably a relative and Maggie Gaynor. It is more than likely that Maggie was also related as Mary's aunt was married to Thomas Gaynor).1 Trevor O'Shea died, at Perth, Western Australia, Australia.      He witnessed the marriage of Garrett Joseph Sheehy and Bridget Shine on 17 June 1903 at St Bridget's, Carlton, Victoria, Australia; (marr wits: Mary Agnes Shine and Trevor O'Shea). Mary was her sister and Trevor was her future brother-in-law.2 In 1913 Trevor O'Shea was a grocer. After the wedding in Aug.1903, they moved to Forbes NSW where William was employed as an Insurance Agent. Their first child, Mary Josephine, was born at Forbes in 1904; Kathleen was born two years later By 1909 the family had moved to the city of Sydney and here William was born in July. 1909 at Mossman. After the birth of her third child Catherine and her three children went by train to visit her family in Victoria. Her first stop was Staghorn Flat where her sister and brother-in-law, Bridget and Garrett Sheehy, were living. It was here that Catherine became unwell and died on 29th Oct, 1909. Garrett Sheehy was the informant on her death certificate. Her body was returned to Melbourne and she was buried at Melbourne General Cemetery. After Catherine's death William, who was a kind and loving father, took on the job of rearing the children but tragedy struck again when the baby, aged nine months, died of gastric-enteritis The two girls, Mary and Kathleen attended school at St. Patrick's, in the Rocks and it was here that they made their First Holy Communion. Later they attended Sacred Heart senior school at Darlinghurst. At this time William had Fish and Chip shop at Darlinghurst. By 1914 William had met and married Mary Hargreaves. The girls remember her as being a kindhearted and good stepmother. William became the licencee of the Palasade Hotel at the Rocks in Sydney, New South Wales. After Mary died in 1944, William went to live in Wollongong with his daughter, Mary Josephine (Mrs T. Lowrie). William died in 1945, just six months later.

Solid bluestone at the front, a slate-roof cottage quite close to the footpath in Carlton. According to owners, John Lewis and Heather Ferrier, the cottage at 100 Palmerston Street was built in 1863 by a carrier named James [should read Cornelius] Sheehy, who also owned the red-brick two storey building which abuts onto the cottage. Th two storey section was built in the 1890s. The Sheehy family owned the property for about 100 years. John Lewis, executive producer of the ABCs ‘7.30 Report' and Heather Ferrier bought it in 1972. They say they found horsehair between the bluestone when they pulled down carrier Sheehy's old stables. The blue stone is still there and now paves practically all of the small, L-shaped back yard. Much has been done to the house since the Sheehy family days and more is being done. The present occupants have created a rear family room which has been paved In tessellated tiles, and off that is the unusual semi-circular kitchen with cupboards of marine ply. It was built by a boat-builder friend. Old drinkers may feel a touch nostalgic if they recognise the stained timber bookshelves either side of the cedar fireplace in the restored Victorian living room. Apparently they once held bottles at the local pub. The stained glass french doors opening to the hall came from the same pub. The house has five rooms downstairs, plus a slate-paved bathroom-cum-laundry. A stairway in the dining room leads up to the main bedroom off which is another smaller room that opens on to a small balcony. Below it is another bedroom-cum-study that has a hipped ceiling of pine. Access to this is via a Victorian cast-iron spiral stairway in the yard. The property will be auctioned at 1 pm on Saturday 1st November by CarIton agent G.A. Thomson and Co. Pty. In any case the phones ran hot and many relations were then aware of the sale of this house which had been built by the late Cornelius Sheehy who had married Johanna Fitzgibbon [NOT James as stated in the paper]. On the day the property was opened for inspection to interested buyers the estate agent must have been elated by the numbers who turned up — until he found that so many were descendants who had come for a nostalgic tour of the old home. Greta Sheehy told me that she was at the house that day and that she was delighted with the new interior, especially with the care and attention given to detail. "I felt a little nostalgic, because of all the happy times I had spent there, but not the least bit sad, because it was so beautiful." Kate and Tony Press also came for a look and took photos. He married Carmel Therese Shine, daughter of Henry Patrick (Harry) Shine and Winifred Bridget Leach, on 8 December 1973 at Our Lady of Good Council, Deepdene, Victoria, Australia.1 Desmond Regan died on 24 October 1994, at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, at age 53.       Desmond Regan was a Lawyer (BA Law, Art & History). In between 1980 and 1995 Desmond Regan was living at; 3 Blackburn St. Surrey Hills, Vic. 3127. Research Notes: Des and Kate worked as joint lecturers at the CAE (the Centre for Advanced Education) from 1981 until Desmond's death in 1994. They taught Irish family history, how to research land records and how to trace the history of your house. The latter resulted in the publication, "How to Trace the History of Your House". The book , published by Penguin in conjunction with the Centre of Advanced Education, was used to promote classes available at CAE Des was a founding member of the Irish Ancestry Group at the Genealogical Society of Victoria and on their behalf conducted family history tours: a genealogical jaunt to the ‘Old Sod'. Kate and Des attended the first Irish Genealogical Conference held at Kilkenny.
